Let out your inner director, actor, or producer because everyone’s a “star” in this first week of camp! We are starting summer off strong with a fun exploration of all things Hollywood. Customize Your Own Clothing (Rising 4th to 9th)

Come learn how to make your clothing just a little bit more you! In this camp you will have the opportunity to alter your clothes through tie-dye, embroidery, stencils, stamp-making, and more! Students will be provided with a tote bag to practice techniques on and they may bring in several personal items such as a jacket or backpack to customize. Additionally, campers will have the opportunity to design and create their own custom patches to add to their favorite clothing and accessories. If you have a strong sense of personal style or love to represent your passions, this camp is a great fit!  


2-in-1 Summer Fun: Games for Brains AND Embroidery/Cross Stitch  (Rising 5th to 9th)

Games for Brains: Your brain needs to be challenged to grow—and you'll grow some serious brain power AND have fun in this course. We'll be solving riddles together, playing exciting board games, exploring logic puzzles, and creating challenges to stump friends and family. Games will be an essential part of the course with the goal of experiencing different types of challenges with open minds. At the end of the week, students will work together hands-on to solve a mystery! There will be a variety of activities to satisfy different interests and introvert/extrovert preferences.

Embroidery/Cross Stitch for Beginners: Learn the basics of cross stitch embroidery in this hands-on art class. Embroidery, especially cross stitch, is a very relaxing and creative hobby that helps develop hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, creative expression, and artistic appreciation. We will also be exploring how different cultures around the world use embroidery to preserve cultural heritage and storytelling. Students will choose from a variety of nature-themed cross stitch selections, learn how to organize their materials, and complete their chosen work over the week (or take home the rest at the end of the class if needed). No skills or materials needed to join - you'll learn everything you need to complete your project while in class! This course also incorporates artistic mindfulness and reflection to support students in finding a productive but deeply enjoyable atmosphere while doing art.


2-in-1 Summer Fun: Mystery Theater AND Stage Combat (Rising 5th to 9th)

Mystery Theater: Join this team of detectives leading the investigation to help tie clues together and solve an original story mystery. Using various prompts such as pictures, found objects, typed-written notes, students will create an original play filled with complex characters, suspects, detectives, and surprising events. Each day is filled with activities in creating a character, writing dialogue, and staging a scene. On the last day, students share their collaborative mystery with family and friends.

Stage Combat: Learn how to tell stories through the art of stage combat. In this class, students will create the illusion of conflict with choreographed moves and safe practices. Each day, students will learn some basic combat moves of slaps, punches, hair pulls, and falls, and put together an unarmed fight combination. Supplies included.

Day Hiking Basics (Rising 6th-9th)

There’s no better way to spend summer days than hiking in and around our beautiful Seattle! These day hikes are great for the beginner hiking enthusiast, and the camp is designed to teach the value of hiking while enjoying the outdoors. Each morning we'll head out for a hike with plenty of rest stops, nature education, and fun along the way. Students should bring a comfortable backpack to sufficiently carry their lunch and water bottle. They must also have sturdy tie-up sneakers or hiking boots. We'll be visiting parks with beach access, so plan to get a little wet and dirty each day!

 

Dungeons & Dragons: Intermediate Campaigning Bootcamp (Rising 6th to 9th)

Machine Sewing: Welcome to LHC’s Machine Sewing Summer camp! Whether you’re brand new to machine sewing or already have experience, this camp is designed to cater to all skill levels. All students will have a full safety overview of essential machine safety protocols, after which new students will complete our beginner sewing curriculum, while the more experienced students can build off their existing skills, taking their sewing abilities to the next level. 

This class is student-led: Students advance at their own pace with autonomy over the projects they choose to create. Projects include backpacks, phone cases, clothing, accessories, bags, games, stuffed animals and more! In this camp, young learners will delve into a world of stitching, crafting, and creating with their own two hands. Our experienced instructors will guide students through each step, ensuring they not only learn valuable sewing skills, but also develop fine motor abilities and enhance finger dexterity. Introduction to Dungeons & Dragons and Role Playing games for students in Intermediate grades 4th & 5th. Students will learn about the history of the game, the role of the dungeon master, and what exactly role playing is.  The goal for the week is to focus on rules and character creation early in the week before embarking on a classic dungeon delve adventure. Students will learn how to write stories of adventure and peril, triumph and tragedy, as we use one of the oldest and best storytelling tropes: action! Art Trading Card Design (Rising 5th to 9th)

Art cards are playing-card sized (2 ½” x 3 ½”) original works of art. These cards can be traded one-for-one, and will be displayed in portfolios. By the end of the week, each student will have had the chance to build a significant body of their own artwork and that of their peers. Students will invent their own styles and techniques and also use examples of visual design from the history of art and various cultures. We will use watercolor, crayon, ink, pencil, and collage. Finally, we will experiment with increased scale to see what happens when something created in miniature is magnified.

Come join us for a week of spectacular adventure into a world of calculating wizards, indomitable warriors, verdant woods, and of course, sprawling dungeons and ancient dragons. In this class, students will learn how to play 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons. Also known as D&D, Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game where the players take on the role of a character of their design. These characters are a part of the world that a storyteller, also known as a Dungeon Master, creates. Calling actors, singers, and dancers! The Evergreen School Summer Performing Arts Program is putting on a musical this summer and we need your talent! In this two-week production class, students become members of a small cast, and each day is filled with fun activities that build skills in musical theater performance. Every student enrolled receives a copy of the music, access to digital rehearsal files, and their own script in advance of rehearsals. Auditions take place on the first day of class. On the last day, August 2, in partnership with our Backstage Crew and Costume Crew classes, actors will present two performances (3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.) complete with sets, costumes, and lights. Our summer productions have a team of three experienced teaching artists led by Evergreen’s Carly Squires Hutchison.

The debate format that will be used in this class is a parliamentary-style of debate. Calling actors, singers, and dancers! The Evergreen School Summer Performing Arts Program is putting on a musical this summer and we need your talent! In this two-week production class, students become members of a small cast, and each day is filled with fun activities that build skills in musical theater performance. Every student enrolled receives a copy of the music, access to digital rehearsal files, and their own script in advance of rehearsals. Auditions take place on the first day of class. On the last day, August 2, in partnership with our Backstage Crew and Costume Crew classes, actors will present two performances (3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.) complete with sets, costumes, and lights. Our summer productions have a team of three experienced teaching artists led by Evergreen’s Carly Squires Hutchison.

By enrolling in this class, students are making the commitment to be present for both performances on August 2, at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., to take on individual responsibilities backstage or in the booths.


Magic the Gathering: Commander Showdown (Rising 5th to 9th)

If you have always wanted to learn this great game, or would like to learn and play new strategies, then this is the class for you. As the world’s most popular trading card game, Magic is a game of both strategy and creativity, created right here in the Seattle area by the gaming company Wizards of the Coast. This week, students will play the game's the most popular format: Commander, also known as EDH, and learn the ins and outs of pod play. Learn a great game and awesome community building skills with your fellow planeswalkers! All students receive a Magic the Gathering deck to keep for themselves by the end of the week.


Writing for Role-Playing Games: Fantasy Writing (Rising 6th to 9th)

Running D&D campaigns can be a rewarding experience. There are many adventures to choose from for a Dungeon Master (DM) to use. However, creating an adventure is a unique challenge. Creating an adventure is about story and setting, but also about how the characters will interact within it. We will discuss all facets of writing fantasy stories with specific emphasis on role playing games. Each day will include specific writing times and writing sprints, along with discussions on world building, using materials like maps, creating story options, and how to work with the players to make the adventure unfold. Experience with being a DM is useful, but not required for this camp.


How to Lead Your Own Dungeons & Dragons Games (Rising 7th to 9th)

Running through the dungeon and beating up the big bad dragon at the end is only half the game. This class will show you how to play the other half: how to manipulate your opponents to your advantage, laying complex plans and experiencing glorious moments as a Dungeon Master, the leader of your own game. But that can only happen if there is a game to play. This class will also teach tactics for how to navigate the social and out-of-game part of leading a D&D group, including scheduling, pitching your game to players, set up, conflict resolution, and more leadership skills.

This class is for D&D players who already understand how to play and want to learn to plan and lead their own games, or for players who have already been DM-ing and want to learn more about how they can take their games to the next level. This class requires at least one year of play experience, and though not required, it is recommended to have played at least one game outside of my classes.

Art Trading Card Design (Rising K to 2nd)

Join us in this art trading card design class with instructor Bryan Carr. Students will have the pleasure of creating art for themselves and their peers. Art cards are playing-card sized (2½” x 3½”) original works of art. These cards can be traded one-for-one, and will be displayed in portfolios. By the end of the week, each student will have had the chance to build a significant body of their own artwork and that of their peers. Students will invent their own styles and techniques and also use examples of visual design from the history of art and various cultures. We will use watercolor, crayon, ink, pencil, and collage. Finally, we will experiment with increased scale to see what happens when something created in miniature is magnified.

Quilting: Welcome to Little Hands Creations’ Quilting Summer Camp! This engaging and hands-on camp is tailored to introduce young learners to the art of quilting and machine sewing. Throughout the program, participants will embark on a creative journey, honing their sewing skills and developing a deep appreciation for the art of quilting. Students will start with a simple 9 square pillow, and then advance to more complex quilting patterns like the optical sawtooth and electric fan. This class is student-led and students advance at their own pace with autonomy over the projects they choose to create. In this camp, we will design and personalize our own handmade books using recycled materials and found objects. Enjoy working with materials such as photographs, news print, fabric, tissue paper, and other mixed media materials and also build practices to find exciting materials in our everyday lives. From sketching to sewing, your budding fashionista will be fully immersed in the world of fashion. Our campers will begin by bringing their unique designs to life on paper, letting their creativity flow freely. Next up, it's time to hit our on-site fabric store, where they'll have the opportunity to choose from an array of fabrics, colors, and patterns to bring their vision to life. With guidance from our experienced instructors, they'll learn the art of selecting materials that perfectly complement their designs. Once armed with their chosen fabrics, it's time to roll up those sleeves and get to work! Throughout the week, students will bring their designs to life, learning valuable skills in sewing, stitching, and crafting garments. From concept to creation, they'll experience every step of the fashion design process.

The Junior Leader Program fosters leadership development by giving participants the opportunity to encounter people who embody leadership themselves, and to work on the skills and character of leadership. Students will spend their mornings learning from leaders and each other. They will meet with alumni and community figures from near-peers to elders, hearing about life after middle school and getting to ask questions and engage in dialogue about their life experiences. Students will also spend time with each other, each creating and leading a group activity for their cohort. In the afternoon, they will be assisting lead teachers with tasks such as preparing snacks, leading project activities and games, and helping care for the younger campers in our day camp. These teens are honored and respected for their level of maturity while greatly appreciated for their youthful, playful spirit. Teens are fully supervised by adults but given the freedom to make some decisions, lead some activities, and supervise younger children.


 

Note for Lunch Break/Morning AND Afternoon Class: If you enroll your child in both a morning class (9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.) and an afternoon class (1:00-4:00 p.m.), they will be supervised all day. No need to pick up during the intervening lunch hour. Just make sure to send a packed lunch!
