Empowering Action

In the intermediate years, students begin to see themselves not just as learners, but as changemakers. With a growing sense of justice, responsibility, and empathy, they want to help others and make a difference. At Evergreen, we channel this powerful shift into opportunities for collective action, community engagement, and real-world impact. Students learn that their ideas—and their efforts—matter.

Serving the Greater Good

Students at this age care deeply about fairness and helping others. We nurture that drive through service learning projects that connect the classroom to the community.

Whether they’re preparing meals for people experiencing homelessness or supporting our Green School initiatives alongside our sustainability coordinator, students learn to take action with empathy, creativity, and a sense of purpose.

Leading Through Passion

Leadership isn’t limited to formal roles. At Evergreen, students take initiative through student-led clubs that meet during lunch—like Rainbow Club, Gardening Club, or Service Club.

These spaces empower students to explore shared interests, collaborate with peers, and contribute to the school community. It’s leadership in action, rooted in joy, voice, and belonging.

Becoming Citizen Scientists

Our 5th grade students serve as citizen scientists, participating in meaningful environmental research and collaborating with other schools to find practical solutions that benefit the local ecosystem. Each week, they test nearby water sources for E. coli, sharing their findings with community partners working to protect our watershed.

They also help raise and release salmon fry into local streams—gaining hands-on understanding of ecology, interdependence, and stewardship. These experiences show students that even at a young age, they can contribute to the well-being of the planet.

Learning to Stand Up and Speak Out

As part of the Upper Division, 4th and 5th graders participate in our annual Social Justice Day—a full-day event focused on equity, inclusion, and community impact. Students choose from workshops led by teachers, staff, and guest facilitators, all centered on themes of diversity, identity, and social change.

With student speakers, guest performers, and interactive sessions, the event invites students to explore what justice means—and how they can help create it. It’s an inspiring day that empowers students to speak up, listen closely, and begin taking action in their own communities.

What It All Adds Up To

By contributing to causes they care about, leading with empathy, and engaging in meaningful service, Evergreen students begin to understand that citizenship is built through small, consistent choices. They discover their capacity to make change—not just someday, but now. Through action, reflection, and real-world impact, they start to see themselves as part of something bigger—and that perspective will guide them well beyond these years.
