The Evergreen School, an independent school serving highly capable students in preschool through 8th grade, is currently accepting applications for an Upper Division (Grades 5-8) French Teacher.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Evergreen School is seeking an engaging and compassionate educator to join our Upper Division teaching team. We are looking for someone with a passion for working with highly capable students and who is eager to bring creativity, energy, and cultural insight to the French language classroom. The Upper Division French Teacher is responsible for teaching French to students in grades 5–8 within a dynamic and robust World Languages program. The ideal candidate uses a wide range of instructional tools and resources to create an engaging, student-centered learning environment that supports language acquisition, cultural understanding, and a joy for learning.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement French curriculum and activities for students at varying levels of progress from grades 5 through 8. This includes creating schemes of work and lesson plans, identifying and selecting instructional resources and methods to meet students’ needs, and preparing the classroom for activities.
- Work as a 7th grade advisor, developing and implementing 7th grade advisory curriculum with a team of 7th grade advisor teachers.
- Regularly assess students’ progress by observing and evaluating performance and development, assigning and grading classwork, homework, tests and assignments and providing appropriate feedback to students, their parents and colleagues.
- Consistently communicate and document clear objectives for all learning activities to maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development in compliance with laws, school policies and independent school regulations and accreditation standards.
- Write twice-yearly narrative student evaluation reports that communicate student progress to Evergreen parents.
- Establish and enforce school rules for students with a positive style and strong classroom management skills.
- Attend school, department, team and parent meetings.
- Participate in certain extracurricular events, such as social and sporting activities, admission events, clubs, overnight camps and student group activities.
- Maintain knowledge of and competency in relevant classroom technology and have a passion for recent developments in teaching resources and methods with the flexibility to incorporate changes into instructional plans and activities.
- Be strictly vigilant about student health and safety.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree and WA State teaching certificate preferred.
- Two to three years’ experience teaching in a lead role, preferably teaching French to upper elementary and/or middle school students

- Strong grasp of language acquisition strategies and creative use of instructional tools and resources.

- Clear and effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Ability to build positive and supportive relationships with students in grades 4–7.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, anti-bias, and anti-racism work in educational settings.
- Familiarity with educational technology and its integration into language instruction.
- Ability to manage planning, teaching, collaboration, and communication responsibilities effectively.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a conscientious approach to meeting deadlines.
- Dependable, punctual, and maintains a high standard of professional integrity and confidentiality.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Experience teaching French in an independent school setting
- Demonstrated success using immersive, project-based, or experiential language learning approaches.
- Experience working with diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
- Proven ability to foster cultural competency and global citizenship in students.
Working Conditions:
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds in connection with job duties such as assisting with classroom setup or moving materials.
- Ability to stand, sit, and move comfortably throughout classrooms and school hallways for extended periods.
- Ability to climb stairs, navigate uneven surfaces, and escort students as needed between locations within and outside school buildings.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including inclement weather.
- Evening and weekend work may be required at times.
Position Details:
This is an exempt, 1.0 FTE full-time, benefits eligible position for the 2025-2026 school year. This position follows a 10-month work schedule while paid over 12 months. The salary range for Evergreen School teachers is $69,788 to $123,232 per year, depending on degree(s) and years of experience.
