Understanding and Mastering Self-Control

Featuring Walter Mischel, Ph.D.

In November 2014, we welcomed Walter Mischel, Ph.D., the world’s leading expert on self-control and a pioneering researcher on the implications of delayed gratification. Mischel’s groundbreaking marshmallow experiment, first conducted in the 1960s, has shown that the ability to delay gratification is critical for a successful life, predicting higher SAT scores, better social and cognitive functioning, a healthier lifestyle, and a greater sense of self-worth.
Dr. Mischel’s research explores the nature of willpower, identifying the cognitive skills and mental mechanisms that enable it, and showing how these can be applied to challenges in everyday life. He shared information from his latest book, The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self-Control, in which he integrates more than 50 years of research, reporting on the original subjects of his experiment and examining how their responses relate to measures of success in the years to follow.
