Community Science Summit in 5th Grade

April 20th, 2023

The 5th grade has been working on a unit on the Salish Sea* and the environmental health of our local waters, and today they hosted a Community Science Summit with invited students from two other local schools, Seattle Waldorf School and Our Lady of the Lake! For an audience of their Evergreen peers and the visiting guest students, 5th graders prepared and presented on a wide range of related topics, such as reducing single-use plastics (and upcycling plastics into art!), as well as fielding questions and offering thoughtful compliments to each other following the presentations. As part of researching projects, they also reached out to local organizations about their work, including the Seattle Times and the City of Shoreline — special thanks to Cameron Reed, Shoreline's environmental program manager, and to Thornton Creek Alliance for meeting with students!

For their project, three students aiming to decrease pollution in salmon streams decided to address the problem by planning a park clean-up, but they also wanted to have a bigger impact by inviting more students to organize clean-ups. So they wrote an article and sent it to local parenting magazines, and we are thrilled to share that their piece has been published by Parent MapClick here to see the article

*The name Salish Sea was proposed in 1989 to reflect the entire U.S.-Canada cross-border ecosystem and includes the combined waters of the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Puget Sound Basin and the San Juan Islands. Both Washington State and British Columbia voted to officially recognize the name in 2009. The name honors the Coast Salish people, who were the first to live in the region.
