Choosing Evergreen

When you choose Evergreen, you’re doing much more than selecting an academic program for your child.

You’re joining a deeply committed learning community that loves to think, create, and celebrate together.

Together, we help raise exceptionally insightful, self-aware, intelligent young people who go on to thrive in high school, college, and career—and embrace their roles as local and global citizens.

At Evergreen, we emphasize greater depth over increased speed, differentiating instruction to make the most of each child’s talents and interests. Students who thrive at Evergreen often show high levels of curiosity, divergent thinking, imagination, and empathy, among other traits.

We’re happy to help you decide if Evergreen is right for your child. You may wish to start with the frequently asked questions below. And please feel free to contact us.

Why might Evergreen be a good fit for my child?

Children who show early academic aptitude, creative thinking and intellectual curiosity do well at Evergreen. Usually referred to as gifted or highly capable, these children may excel in a broad range of areas, such as early acquisition of language, strong sense of spatial relationships, advanced comprehension and the ability to process information quickly or in complex ways. Characteristics of highly capable children include:

  • Rapid learner
  • Unusually large vocabulary
  • Enjoys problem solving
  • Asks probing questions, thinks critically
  • Highly developed curiosity
  • Imagination
  • Interest in experimenting and doing things differently
  • Enthusiasm
  • Deep, intense feelings
  • Highly sensitive
  • Longer attention span
  • Displays intense concentration
  • Persistence
  • Idealism and sense of justice at an early age
Because analytic intelligence is one measure that we consider, we require that all children entering kindergarten and above take an IQ test. Learn more about testing here

What are the main entry points?

Preschool, prekindergarten, and kindergarten are when many students begin at Evergreen, and we also add a handful of new spaces in 1st grade each year. In addition, 6th grade is also a notable entry point for our middle school. In other grades, spaces are limited and based on attrition, but we generally welcome a few new students at most grade levels. If you feel that Evergreen might be the right match for your child, we encourage you to submit an application.

What is the best age to start? How old does my child need to be?

For our early childhood program, children must meet the following minimum age requirements by August 31:

Preschool: Three years old*
Prekindergarten: Four years old
Kindergarten: Five years old

Exceptions will not be made to the age/cut-off date policy.

*Students must be toilet trained prior to attending school in the fall.

When should we apply?

Applications open every year on September 1 and the deadline is in mid-January, for students to start school the following fall. There are no mid-year admissions. Learn more about the application process.
