Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Diversity, equity and inclusion are central to all that we do.

Our vision for The Evergreen School is for its members to value and embrace the dignity and diversity of all people. We actively seek and support students, families, faculty, staff and trustees who bring a diversity of identity into our community.

Our mission makes it essential that we skillfully deliver an inclusive educational program that

  • teaches respect for others,
  • empowers students of all backgrounds equitably,
  • encourages social responsibility, and
  • prepares students to be leaders in an interdependent global community.

We recognize there is a critical difference between merely opening doors of opportunity and creating a sustained pathway toward success. At Evergreen, our goal is to curate a culture where every family feels fully welcomed and encouraged to participate in every aspect of the community.

In preparing our students for a diverse and complex world, we strive to intentionally incorporate issues of equity and social justice throughout our curriculum and across all grade levels. We encourage and support courageous conversations among the members of our community to promote greater cross-cultural understanding.

Rajeswari Sachdeva
Director of Diversity and Community

Our commitment to diversity is both a vital opportunity for our highly capable students and a fundamental responsibility for our entire community.

This commitment is affirmed by the board through our Strategic Plan, head of school, administration, faculty and staff of The Evergreen School.

Opportunity: BIPOC Fellowship Program
Full-time Teaching Assistant Position with Teaching Certification Scholarship

The Evergreen School offers a full-time teaching assistant job plus up to $10,000 each year toward tuition, for an aspiring BIPOC educator enrolled in an accredited teaching certification and master’s program. See our CAREERS page for details. As student teaching becomes part of the candidate’s program, Evergreen will work with the accrediting college to support student teaching at Evergreen. The fellow will work with a mentor teacher and experienced teaching team. Other opportunities include observation of other classrooms and mentoring and support throughout the program.

We are also a member of People of Color in Independent Schools: POCIS Seattle. This is a consortium of independent schools in the Northwest committed to helping people of color—students, families, and school employees—thrive in these schools and working to ensure that people of color have the resources to reach their highest potential, both academically and professionally.

What Is Diversity at Evergreen?

These characteristics include, but are not limited to: race, ethnicity, sex, national origin, geographic background, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, learning style, personality, family makeup, and socioeconomic status.
