Who We Are

Dear visitors,

Welcome to The Evergreen School in Shoreline, Wash., just on the edge of Seattle. We were founded in 1963 by Edith Christensen to meet the educational needs of gifted children. Today the core of our program focuses on teaching highly capable children with a curriculum that emphasizes curiosity, passion and creativity.

It appears something is wrong with the flash player.

We invite you to experience our philosophy through this narrated slideshow.

We know that brain development is deeply affected by children's early experiences. Therefore, teachers and parents do much to shape children's lifelong habits of learning and knowing,

Our children are naturally curious, creative explorers. They are encouraged to be responsible for their learning, appreciative of their talents and hard work. As one of our first graders instructed a friend, "just listen until your mind goes deeper and then you will understand." We emphasize the development of a growth mindset: talents can be developed; great abilities are built over time; divergent thinking and problem solving come from challenge without judgment. Our curriculum is open-ended and dynamic to provide deeper understanding and awareness.

Three of the most exciting features of The Evergreen School are our Global Awareness Program, our commitment to Environmental Stewardship and our dedication to the social and emotional support of our students.

Our school is rich with multicultural experiences culminating in our Global Awareness Program. Our eighth grade students spend a year immersed in the world of a non-Western country and travel to that country for three weeks in the spring, bringing that learning alive. Through this program, students learn not only about their own culture and others', but also more about themselves.

As the National Wildlife Federation's 1000th Schoolyard Habitat, our forest-like campus is a nationally recognized outdoor learning environment. We're pleased to be a Green School that adheres to responsible sustainability practices. In 2005 we were honored with the prestigious Green Globe Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in environmental stewardship.

We encourage our students to be compassionate and courageous. Emotional well-being is a powerful force for learning. Therefore, we dedicate much real time to social emotional development.

I hope you enjoy perusing our Web site to learn more about this wonderful school.

Sincerely,

Margaret Wagner
