Learning and Enrichment
Our Learning and Enrichment classes offer mentally challenging and interesting hands-on classroom experiences. Opportunities for our children to exercise their minds during the summer months. Lessons are designed to encourage creativity while solving problems, and to foster curiosity and a love of learning. Students are in good hands with caring, experienced educators.

| Beginning Chess for Girls and Boys |
Join us for these fun, fantastic, week-long chess lessons! Children at the beginning and beginning-intermediate levels may enroll. Dr. Leo Stefurak and Lori Osseward are highly skilled at teaching and working with children at their appropriate chess playing levels. Children will study and learn basic skills of the game, then practice through friendly, competitive play in the afternoons. Plenty of recess and playtime work into these mornings allowing the children to rejuvenate their minds for each unique week of chess instruction. Very beginning chess students and/or children with developing attention spans may enjoy the relaxing half-day week of chess.

| Exploring the Hawaiian Islands |
This week, students will participate in activities all about our 50th state - Hawaii! Through reading, discussion, and play, children will be learning about Kauai, Maui, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, and the big island of Hawaii. Projects will include hula skirts, beach towels, leis, and other great crafts.

| Intermediate Chess for Girls and Boys |
Children who have had previous chess instruction may enroll. This is another more challenging and stimulating week of chess with Dr. Leo Stefurak designed especially for experienced students. Tactical skills and middle-game strategies will be emphasized as students build upon their opening knowledge and individual styles. A training tournament will be conducted each afternoon enabling students to join theory with practice.

A fun cooking class for children helping to build confidence in the kitchen. The class will go over the basics of health and safety in the kitchen. Each "chef" will design their own apron to take home. Students will create some delicious kid-friendly, heart-healthy snacks to tantalize the taste buds! This week will be mainly working with foods that do not require an oven.

Introducing students
to the essence of engineering through challenges, problem solving, and light competition. Participants learn how to design, assemble, and program robots with sensors, motors, and computers using LEGO Mindstorms. This experience culminates into robot games and battles where students show off and have fun with their working robots. This class promotes problem solving, logic, artistic expression, and team-building involving minimal competition.

Playing with many kinds of magnets leads to great discoveries and a deeper understanding about how a magnet works. Magnet art, making a compass, and loads of inquiry-based experiments will be the main attractions for this fun-filled week.

A unique reading class that closely resembles radio drama. The teacher assesses the reading ability of the class, then provides appropriate stories for the groups' reading level. Students are actively participating by taking turns reading aloud portraying different characters. Physical movement is minimal while speech is used to convey the actions. Students apply comprehension skills, including author's purpose, character traits, mood and theme. This class helps students with their reading skills in an interesting and gratifying way without the pressure of memorizing lines.

Insects, arachnids, crustaceans, chilopods and diplopods make up a huge part of the animal kingdom. There is no other animal group on Earth that is as diverse in its species as anthropods. There may be as many as 200,000,000 bugs for every human on Earth! Students will create a field journal and take off-campus trips to Twin Ponds Park to investigate the world of arthropods. Lessons will cover science, environmental appreciation, and respect for these amazing creatures through research and hands-on learning.

Class discussion and activities this week will include our solar system; the Milky Way, moons, planets, the sun, asteroids, comets, and space rocks. We'll discuss how planets orbit and we'll take a moon walk to explore gravity. Students will use brainpower all week to solve different types of mysteries. The class will enjoy the work of great mystery authors. Students learn how to create their own treasure hunt. A hands-on tasty and healthy cooking class. Students will engage in simple cooking projects. | Siamese "Bughouse" Chess for Girls and Boys |
Siamese Chess, "Bughouse," is a team game between pairs of chess players. Siamese chess is played nationally with a codified set of rules and we in the Northwest do it best! Children should join us for a week of study and play. No previous Siamese experience is needed to have fun in these camps.

Exploration of the land and time of dinosaurs! Students will learn how a paleontologist digs up fossils and then they will practice digging up their own fossils. | Veterinarian, Biologist, Zoologist, Oh My! |
A chance to learn about some different professions involving animals. If your child has ever talked about wanting to someday work with animals, then this is just the summer class for him/her. Each day the class will be heading out to visit people who work with animals. The class will visit a veterinarian's clinic, a zoo, a college department and an animal shelter.

| Strategy Games, Math Puzzles and Complex Calculators |
We'll spend the week challenging ourselves with "Think Fun" games, like Rush Hour, solving tricky math problems together, making 3-D polygons, and playing with graphing calculators. A class to help students strengthen their skills of speaking in front of a group of people. Through a fun format, students will learn techniques that professionals use to tap the power of the spoken word. We'll view for discussion; commercials, famous speeches, and stand-up comedy. A short story begins as close to the conclusion as possible, and grabs the reader from the very first line. It conserves character and scenes, typically focuses on just one problem, and drives towards a sudden, unexpected revelation. | Tales and Fables from Around the World |
We're traveling the globe this week discovering stories from long ago. The class will be reading tales and fables from Greece, Japan, China, India and Africa. Students will be creating skits, acting out their stories and creating puppets.

| Advanced Chess for Girls and Boys |
Students wishing to build an opening repertoire and develop endgame skills are welcome to join in a week of study and play with Dr. Leo Stefurak, and practice with other experienced players. Tournament experience is recommended along with a desire to systemize chess study skills. Thinking skills, visualization approaches, and the unification of strategy with tactics will be the focus of this week's advanced study and tournament play.

An introduction to the game of chess. This half-day morning week of chess is a great way for beginners to learn the basics of this wonderfully challenging game. Many studies have shown that chess helps young minds to develop exceptional critical thinking and problem solving skills. Both girls and boys benefit as chess also increases creativity and cognitive skills. Coach Lori uses games, stories, puzzles, and art projects to help our very young children learn to love this ancient game.

A training tournament and individual game review will accompany our chess study throughout the week.
