Our Approach Overall learning goals are set by our faculty to ensure a well-balanced, timely educational experience that also includes basic skills. One of our most important guidelines for curriculum development is the stimulation of higher level thinking skills.Within this framework, children may then set their own objectives, short and long term, using their personal drive and unique perceptions of the world. Emphasis is placed on the development of insight not memorization. Teachers set up situations, problems, and lessons designed to allow students to learn by inquiry and discovery. Children schooled by these methods are likely to grow up thinking logically, carrying a healthy self-image and thinking beyond their own needs to those of others. We believe that these characteristics will be valuable as adults, and we, therefore, put greater stress on them than on excellence in handwriting and extreme speed in computation. The Evergreen School uses a noncompetitive, individualized approach to learning. Ungraded written reports that describe each student’s progress in all subjects are distributed to parents. Diagnostic tests are often used to indicate when a child is ready to move on to new areas, allowing students to progress sequentially at their own rate. Our philosophy is to take advantage of technological and informational advances, which complement intellectual power. |
