Library

The Evergreen Library has an informal atmosphere that encourages children to browse and relax among the books. Our spacious facility includes a library skills classroom area, a conference room, and cozy window seats for relaxing and enjoying the best in children's literature. Students are welcome in the library at any time from 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Student access to materials is not restricted by age. K-8 Students may check out as many books as they wish for 2 weeks. Preschool and Prekindergarten students check out books to stay in their classrooms, or go home with the help of a parent, for 2 weeks. Over 500 volumes circulate each week.

Our Collection

The library houses a collection of over 20,000 volumes and 15 periodicals, making it the largest single K-8 collection in the region. Approximately 1000 new books are added to the collection each year. Proceeds from the Book Fair, held twice each year, help with these additions. The entire catalog is automated and may be searched from 5 terminals using CASPR Library World. All of the user terminals have unrestricted Internet access. Students may use the computers freely for assignments after completing a use permit.

The library conference room now houses the Parent and Staff resource collections of over 1000 volumes and several professional journals.

Our Librarian

Sally Smith, M.L.S., with a Social Sciences Teaching Certificate, is our full time librarian. She has been the librarian at the Evergreen School since 1976 and has guided the library through many wonderful changes. She is assisted by several helpful parent volunteers.

Library Skills

Our students learn to effectively use the library for both research and personal use. Formal library instruction begins in 2nd grade with introductions to library use, the online catalog, and the Dewey Decimal system. It culminates in the 8th grade when they use the library's extensive collection of global field study resources to write the class guidebook for their Global Awareness trip in the spring.
