The Evergreen Education The Evergreen journey embraces a sense of connectedness and community. Among the themes which infuse the school’s culture and curriculum are global awareness, environmental stewardship, and the richness and strengths of diversity. All grade levels complement foreign language classes with the study of geography and the tapestry of world cultures. The youngest children learn of ethnic and holiday traditions, and can look forward in coming years to comparative religious study followed by the origins and interaction of cultures throughout history.A growing sense of the global community is entwined with a sense of place as students, parents, and staff participate in the campus habitat restoration project. By planting native species or monitoring weather and water quality, we foster both wonder and understanding of the natural world. Throughout the school day we connect our young people to their surroundings and to the world, culminating in the eighth-grade field study in a non-Western country where our students take their place as citizens of the world. At Evergreen, we provide the tools and then point students toward discovery. Our faculty uses real-world situations, thought-provoking problems and engaging lessons to give students a well-balanced, up-to-date education designed for mastery of basic skills through inquiry. Whether it's the beliefs that bind societies, economics that begin migrations or geographic features that shape culture, we weave our planet and its peoples throughout the school for a global approach to understanding. West African stews simmer quietly and fragrant Thai dishes waft through hallways. Folk songs ring out from young voices and ancient temples rise in classrooms. Our teachers take pride in exposing students to varied influences at a young age and encourage divergence and synthesis in thinking. Through understanding others we build composites of ourselves—in this mindset, the adventure of learning has no limits. |
