Being Green
The Evergreen School is situated on a four-acre site in a small forest
typical of Pacific Northwest landscaping. The landscape plays a key
educational role. It provides opportunities for a study of native plant
communities, wildlife habitats and hydraulic cycles. On our land, we
see how nature provides food and shelter for birds and animals, how
precipitation collects and moves across the terrain, and how plant
materials respond to seasonal changes in light and water. We have been
awarded a Certificate of Achievement as a School Yard Habitat by the
National Wildlife Federation.
The site is beautiful and incorporates a broad range of environments. We have
distinct wetlands and a riparian environment; substantial flat areas for playfields;
and an uplands forest with slopes and terraces including numerous specimen
redwoods, cedars and other mature trees.
Evergreen incorporates reusing and recycling into our curriculum, and into our community's everyday life. In 2005, The Evergreen School was awarded King County 's Leadership in Sustainable Schools Green Globe Award. The award recognizes schools and school districts for outstanding efforts to reduce solid waste, and for initiating or improving other sustainable strategies such as water and energy conservation, environmental purchasing, greenhouse gas reduction and hazardous waste reduction.
Nominees for this award were selected from the King County Green Schools Program which assists individual schools and school districts to initiate or expand conservation practices, and to increase awareness among administrators, staff, students and parents.
