Admission

Decision-making Criteria

Applicants to The Evergreen School are considered for admission based on the school's determination of a child's potential to be successful in our program, and on a family/school match with the school philosophy, program and environment. In making an admission decision, in addition to academic skills (and readiness skills for the 4- and 5-year-olds), achievement and experience, the admission committee considers an applicant's creativity, intelligence, curiosity and motivation.

In making admission decisions, the admission committee reviews all information obtained from application documents, follow up (if necessary) and Evergreen assessment evaluations. The committee reviews a candidate's qualifications in terms of the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated academic excellence in current or previous schools (does not apply to applicants to Preschool, Prekindergarten and Kindergarten).
  • Previous behavioral records; social and emotional development (especially for early childhood applicants to grades Preschool - Kindergarten)
  • IQ Testing results

For applicants to prekindergarten who will turn 5 by September 1, and applicants to grades kindergarten through 3, full-scale IQ scores in the superior range (95th percentile and above) on the required Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence - III (WPPSI-III); or WISC IV.

For applicants to Grades 4 - 8, full-scale IQ scores in the superior range (95th percentile and above) on the required Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC IV).

  • Achievement test scores in the high percentiles (90th percentile or above in national norms) in standardized testing (usually from Grade 3).
  • For applicants to grades 5 - 8, the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) test results are also required.
  • Potential to contribute to the school community and grow and develop in the Evergreen environment.
  • Learning/behavioral needs or differences that the school determines its program and faculty can support.
  • Results of assessments and interviews during the applicant's visit to
    The Evergreen School.
Notes:
In addition, strong consideration (in no priority order) is given to applicants who are:
  • Children of Evergreen faculty/staff.
  • Children with siblings currently enrolled at The Evergreen School.
  • Children with a sibling also applying to The Evergreen School, dependent on space availability in the sibling's grade level of apply. In developing a grade level class, gender may also be a strong consideration, depending on the current gender balance in that grade level.

Admission Decisions

Once a candidate has completed the admission process (document submission, visit, screening and interview), the admission committee will review all applicants' qualifications in a specific grade level vis a vis space availability and class composition. The following decisions will be made:
  • Acceptance: An applicant meets all qualifications and is considered to have the potential for success in The Evergreen School program. The candidate receives an invitation to enroll.
  • Denial: The Evergreen School has ascertained that the program is not a successful match for the applicant.
  • Wait Pool: When an applicant meets all qualifications and is considered to have the potential for success in the program, but space is not available, the child receives acceptance, but is not offered a space until it becomes available.
A wait pool candidate does not have a specific place in the wait pool, but will be offered an available space in accordance with the class or grade level composition.

After January 13, 2011, applications will be considered depending on the number of completed applications received and on a space available basis. Call the Office of Admission to determine if spaces are available in the desired grade level. If space permits, late applications are usually considered after the first wave of notification.
NOTICE OF NONDISCRIMINATORY POLICY AS TO STUDENTS
The Evergreen School does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religious affiliation, sexual orientation or physical abilities in the administration of our admission and education policies, scholarship and financial aid programs, or athletic and other school administered programs.
