From the Head

Welcome to The Evergreen School in Shoreline, Washington. We were founded in 1963 by Edith Christensen to meet the educational needs of gifted children. Today the core of our program focuses on teaching highly capable gifted children with an enriched curriculum.

Margaret Wagner, Head of School

I would like to highlight three of the most
exciting features of The Evergreen School:

Our Global Awareness Program

Our school is rich with multicultural experiences and study culminating in our Global Awareness Program. Our eighth grade students spend a year immersed in the world of a non-Western
country and travel to that country for three weeks in the spring to experience what they have studied. Through this program, students learn not only about another culture, but also more about themselves and their own culture by comparison.

Our Environmental Stewardship

As the National Wildlife Federation’s 1000th Schoolyard Habitat, our
forest-like campus is a nationally recognized outdoor learning environment. Our wetland area provides opportunities for the study of native plant communities, wildlife habitats and hydraulic cycles. On our land, we witness how nature provides food and shelter for birds and animals, how precipitation collects and moves across the terrain, and how plant materials respond to seasonal changes in light and water.

In addition, we're pleased to be a Green School that adheres to responsible sustainability practices and encourages environmental awareness. We have a successful recycling program, which is partially run by our students, and in 2005 we were honored with the prestigious Green Globe Award, which recognizes outstanding acheivements in environmental stewardship.

Our Dedication to the Social and Emotional Support of Our Students

We believe students who are nurtured in a supportive educational environment develop into healthy, responsible adults. Everyone on our campus, from teachers to specialists to our primary and upper division counselors, dedicate themselves to cultivating each child's self-esteem and self-confidence.

At Evergreen, we strive to instill a compassionate attitude toward our world and a sophisticated curiosity to carry them through life. We challenge naïve beliefs, provoke questions, invite multiple perspectives, and ultimately stretch our students’ minds, always keeping in mind that every child is unique. We desire children to recognize and embrace others’ points of view, values and differences.

I hope you enjoy perusing our Web site to learn more about this wonderful school.
